A clear, kind guide to the 11+ exam
The 11+ is an entrance test used by grammar schools across England in Year 6. It mainly tests Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, in either GL or CEM-style papers. Preparation usually starts 12–24 months before the exam.
Two main exam styles
GL Assessment
Topic-based questions, mostly multiple-choice with separate papers per subject.
CEM-style
Mixed-subject papers under time pressure, with a strong vocabulary focus.
When to start
- Year 3: Build strong foundations in number, reading and vocabulary.
- Year 4: Develop techniques across all four subjects.
- Year 5: Focus on timed practice and full mock exams.
